Where is the Koblenz Writing Center located?

We do not have a physical location. Our tutoring sessions all take place in Google Hangouts.

Who can use the Writing Center?

Any University of Koblenz-Landau student who is working on an English writing assignment can use the Writing Center.

How do I make an appointment?
You can see the available time slots and make an appointment online
here.

What should I do if there are no available appointments?
As papers come due throughout the semester, the Writing Center will be busy, and it might be that there are no available appointments. There are a few things you can do if that happens.

Check the schedule regularly. If someone cancels their appointment, that time will open up again.
As a last resort, you can send the tutor a chat message in Google Hangouts during their shift. If they have a last-minute cancellation or a no-show, they may be able to work with you in place of another student.

How can I send a chat message to one of the tutors?
In Google Hangouts, you can reach the tutors with the following email addresses:

  • Alex: kwcwritingtutor1 (at) gmail.com
  • Carla: kwcwritingtutor3 (at) gmail.com
  • Phil:  kwcwritingtutor5 (at) gmail.com
  • Andrej: kwcwritingtutor4 (at) gmail.com

What if I need to reschedule or cancel my appointment?
In your confirmation email, there will be options to change or reschedule your appointment. This is why it’s important that you keep those confirmation emails just in case something happens.

What if I don’t show up for my appointment?
We will keep track of any students who make appointments but fail to show up for them. If you fail to show up for several appointments without cancelling beforehand, you may be required to meet with the coordinator before being allowed to make any new appointments.

What if I am late for my tutoring session?
Our tutors will call you at the appointed time. If you don’t answer, they will try to call you a second time. If you are running late or having technical problems and you miss these calls, you can try to call the tutor back. However, if you are more than 10 minutes late, the tutor will record you as a “no show” and your time slot will be given to any waiting students.

What happens during a tutoring session?
Our tutors will read through your paper with you, talk through your ideas, and work with you to strengthen your writing skills.

What kind of help will I receive from the tutor?
A lot of what happens during these tutoring sessions is conversation. Our tutors will help you to think through your ideas, arguments, claims, and organization by talking about them. In addition, they might provide you with strategies for problems you’re having or direct you to additional resources. They will not edit or proofread your paper.

Can I get help on writing assignments that are in German?
No. We currently only offer assistance on writing assignments that are in English.

What if I’m writing an English paper for another department, such as Biology or Computer Science? Can I still use the Writing Center?
Yes.

Can I email my essay to one of the tutors to be checked?
No. The Writing Center is not a proofreading service.
