The ToolBus - a service-oriented architecture for language processing tools

Prof. Dr. Paul Klint

Service-oriented architectures (SOA) aim at the decoupling of processing steps and are usually applied in the context of heavy-weight business applications where traceability and transaction management are the dominant requirements. In Interactive Development Environments (IDEs) and language processing tool suites other requirements prevail: the tight integration of tools and the very efficient exchange of data are more prominent as requirements. The ToolBus is a coordination architecture to achieve this. It is based on process algebra as concurrency paradigm and on ATerms for the dense representation and exchange of data.  In this talk I will give an overview of the ToolBus technology and its applications for building language processing tools.
