Title: Challenges and Solutions for Autonomous, Sustainable and Resource Efficient Soil and Crop Management

Abstract:

To double agricultural production by 2050 agricultural production needs efficient and precise field machinery which conserves soil, manages a diverse cropping plan, and can be deployed by an aged or disabled person. Here we present a new traction mechanism for agricultural field machinery based on retractable crampons and a push-pull mechanism. The mechanism is energy-efficient, does not compact soil, and enables in-situ soil measurements. Substantial R&D in vehicle engineering, automatisation and socio-economics is required to develop its full potential. We provide a road map for further work, with a focus on immediate challenges and possible solutions.
