Summary

When released into surface waters, engineered inorganic nanoparticles (EINP) can be subject to multiple transformations. The objectives of MASK are to understand under which conditions EINP in aquatic systems will attach to suspended matter, under which conditions and in which time scale EINP are coated by NOM present in freshwater systems, how these coated colloidal particles are stabilized in the aquatic system and to which extent the aquatic aging processes are reversible. Homo-aggregation, coating changes, biological interactions and hetero-aggre¬gation are hypothesized as key processes governing EINP aging in water bodies. In process orientated laboratory incubation experiments (50 ml to 6 L) with increasing complexity, MASK unravels the relevance and the interplay of inorganic colloids, aquagenic and pedogenic organic matter and solution physicochemistry for stability of EINP. These systems will successively ap-proach situations in real waters. MASK thus provides information on EINP fluxes in the aquatic compartment, their time scales, reversiblity and relative relevance.
EINP will be analysed by standard light scattering techniques, ICP-MS, ESEM/EDX, WetSTEM and AFM. A method coupling hydrodynamic radius chromatography (HDC) with ICPMS recently developed by K. Tiede for nAg0 will be optimized and developed for further EINP analysis, MASK is further responsible for the virtual subproject ANALYSIS, the development and optimi-zation of joint research unit methods of EINP analysis, sample preparation and sample storage, the exchange of methods and coordinates the joint analyses and the central EINP database.

Deutsche Zusammenfassung

Alterung synthetischer anorganischer Nanopartikel in Oberflächengewässern

Nach der Freisetzung industriell gefertigter anorganischer Nanopartikel (EINP) in Oberflächengewässer unterliegen die unterschiedlichen Veränderungs-prozessen. Das Ziel von MASK ist, zu verstehen, unter welchen Bedingungen und in welcher Zeitskala im Süßwasserbereich eine Anlagerung an Schwebstoffe und eine Oberflächenveränderung durch z.B. natürliche organische Substanz erfolgt, inwiefern dadurch eine Stabilisierung der EINP in der Wasserphase erfolgt und ob Oberflächenveränderungen der EINP reversibel sind. In Zusammenarbeit mit den Teilprojekten IMPACT und BIOFILM untersucht MASK den Einfluss des kolloidalen Zustands auf die Wirkung der Nanopartikel und auf die Struktur bakterieller Biofilme.

Wir hypothetisieren, dass Homo-Aggregation, Veränderung der Oberflächeneigenschaften, biologische Interaktion und Hetero-Aggregation die zentralen Prozesse für die aquatische Alterung der EINP darstellen. In prozess-orientierten Labor-Inkubationsexperimenten (Volumen zwischen 50 ml und 6 L) von steigender Komplexität wird die Bedeutung und das Wechselspiel von anorganischen Kolloiden, aquagener und pedogener organischer Substanz und der Lösungschemie für die EINP-Stabilität untersucht. Die Experimente nähern sich sukzessive den Bedingungen in echten Gewässern an. Damit erhält MASK Information über die EINP-Flüsse im aquatischen Kompartiment, ihre Zeitskalen und ihre relative Bedeutung.
Die EINP werden mit Hilfe von Lichtstreuungsmessungen, ICP-MS, ESEM/EDX, WetSTEM und AFM charakterisiert. Zusätzlich wird die ICP-MS mit einer hydrodynamischen Radius-Chromatographie (HDC) gekoppelt.

Darüber koordiniert MASK die zentralen Mesokosmensysteme und gemeinsamen Experimente sowie das virtuelle Teilprojekt ANALYSIS. Hier werden gemeinsame EINP-Analysenmethoden, Probenvorbereitungs- und Aufbewahrungsmethoden entwickelt und optimiert und die gemeinsamen Analysen und die zentrale EINP Datenbank koordiniert.
