Profile of MA „Studies of Culture“:
The MA comprises four terms and is the continuation of the BA in „Studies of Culture“. But it also addresses graduates from other subjects and universities. Each application will be examined with regard to our concept. The MA is scientifically- and research-oriented. Graduates who do not head for an academic career but rather for professions in Economy, Cultural Management, Journalism etc., can gain profound and differentiated knowledge of complex cultural phenomena as well as a diverse methodically competence by the consequent orientation to present research discourses, which make them attractive for different kinds of fields of work and employers.
The MA profile is reached by four innovative main areas and a consequent transdisciplinarity: Eleven disciplines are unified into one integrative concept. Furthermore students and teaching staff collaborate on a research project from start on and from different perspectives. Additionally we have an close support characterized by seminars and projects in small groups, „Team-Teaching“ in workshops, by autonomous self-study. The profound impartation of modern theories and methods is backed by comprehensive and qualifying research- and media practice (inter alia film-, audio- and online production in the institutes own multimedia lab).
The MA „Studies of Culture“ is as transdisciplinary as our BA, but it still allows graduates a specific textual profiling. Four different alternative core themes which each focuses on different special disciplines and occupational fields are available: (a) Culture & complexity, (b) Diversity of the forms of knowledge, (c) Internationality & Transculturality of media, (d) Aesthetic of contemporary culture.
This nationwide unique offer with the triad of integrative components, individual main area and transdisciplinary research also provides appeal to external applicants to study this MA in Koblenz.
In comparison to the BA the MA-students study more independent (more self-study and preparation from technical texts, extensive presentations, project work or term papers as preferred record of achievement). Additionally we attach great importance to the common methodological training to convey systematically problem-solving skills to the students. For this purpose a practical research module is included, in which the students themselves organize scientific events, small research projects or they can decide for research stays in other institutions before they start writing their Master’s thesis which they defend with a dissertation. The courses in the chosen core themes are supplemented with general components of Studies of Culture in the form of a lecture series and a scientific colloquium.
