3D Reconstruction

Reconstructing three dimensional structure from two dimensional images is widely known as 3-d-reconstruction. Among stereo and multi view systems even a single, moving camera can be used (structure from motion). Reconstruction of the surrounding environment is an important task for many applications. It can be used for self localization and mapping of unknown territories in robotics and is the basis for augmented reality. It can also help image analysis by providing additional information about the geometric nature of objects. Some of the main questions in 3-d-reconstruction are:

  • the choice of features (feature extraction)
  • matching of features from an image to another image or a 3-d-model
  • robust tracking of features over time
  • computation of the 3-d-position of a feature from images
  • reconstruction of the camera pose
