The interdisciplinary project will be carried out as a collaboration between the two departments Computer Science (Institute for Computational Visualistics) and Science of Arts (Institute for Science of Arts). The aim is to develop computer science-based methods to explore the arts research area of ornaments. In the context of the project a digital image database which holds around 1500 images has already been established.
The developed algorithms identify and analyze the patterns in the images and the results are stored back into a database. With this information knowledge features should be extracted in order to allow an automatic control of the algorithms for the detection and analysis of ornaments.
The following figure shows an overview of the entire system for the analysis and classification.
