Information systems research is concerned with the methods and techniques to support:

  • the design
  • the implementation and
  • the economic use of information and communication systems


in businesses and administrations and the resulting changes in organizational structures. This results in a wide range of different problems and solution concepts. To name a few: the interactions between information systems and business strategy, the design and development of mature and secure communication infrastructure, the introduction of information systems, the proper consideration and design of an organisation, the profitability analysis of soft- and hardware requirements and potentials.

Thematic core areas:

The working groups of the institut for IS research are divided into four thematic core areas which are represented by the professors:

Since summer 2007 the four research groups are further supported by Dr. Andreas Engel (Chief Information Officer of the City of Cologne) an honorary professor in computer science and management. Furthermore, since the 1st April 2011 the DAAD visiting professors Sue Williams and Sergii Chernyshenko are supporting the institute as well.
