rosecat - rosecat open source ePA/eID client attains transparency

At the end of 2010, the first electronic identity cards will be handed out to German citizens. Its eID function will enable secure transactions via Internet. To do so, a software supplied by a commercial vendor has to be installed on the citizens' computers. Since the software's source code is kept secret, the vendor has to be trusted in if eID is to be used.

Within the framework of "rosecat", an open source software is being developed which implements the eID function and offers additional functionality, with a particular focus on aids that make it easier for users to understand the eID protocol.
