ROLE

The ROLE project covers following objectives:

  • research and develop a psycho-pedagogically sound framework for supporting the individual composition of learning services in ROLE

  • support the individual assembly of accessible learning services, tools and resources in responsive open learning environments

  • create new engineering methodologies to enable significant contributions to ROLE from learner and developer communities from outside the project consortium

  • develop and sustain an evaluation methodology to systematically demonstrate the effectiveness of different ROLE in test-beds focused on the transition of learners

  • exploit and disseminate the ROLE results to wider communities and markets

ROLE (Responsive Open Learning Environments) is an integrated project funded under the IST 7th Frameworkprogramme of the European Commission with 16 internationally renowned research groups and companies cover all required pedagogical and technical competencies. The project started February 1st 2009 and will be completed January 31st 2013.

ROLE offers adaptivity and personalization of content, navigation and functionalities of the entire learning environment. For the learner and teacher, the ROLE infrastructure enables for the first time a truly learner-centred PLE (Personal Learning Environment). The ROLE infrastructure will empower the user for true lifelong learning across institutional boundaries.

The integration of learning with other parts of the learner’s social life will be considerably facilitated, thus increasing motivation for and effectiveness of learning. The ROLE learning services and tools will create new opportunities for collaborative learning and learning communities as well for emerging markets.

The work of ROLE will advance the state-of-the-art in human resource management; self-regulated and social learning; psycho-pedagogical theories of adaptive education and educational psychology; service composition and orchestration; and the use of ICT in lifelong learning.
