Interdisciplinary Theory of Mind

The efficient use of languge, the development of culture and the ability to connect with close ones, all require having the ability of "theory of mind". But what is theory of mind? In this seminar, theorization of theory of mind will be extensively discussed under five frameworks: Philosophy, Neuroscience, Psycholinguistics, Developmental Psychology and Social Psychology. Alongside written assignments, students will be given interactive tasks such as theatrical representation of philosophical dilemmas, group discussions and creative presentations. At the end of the seminar, students are expected to have broad understanding of theory of mind stemming from these different perspectives as well as the interconnection between the different disciplines. In the final assessment, students will be asked to apply their knowledge to real-world problem such as political misunderstanding, cultural integration and interpersonal issues such as loneliness and social anxiety.

Social Psycholgy Across Cultures

Culture is an integral part of humanity. In order to understand individuals and groups’ behaviours, understanding of culture is a must. In this course, students are first introduced to the idea of where cultures came from, mainly from the interaction of environment and human psychology. The second part of the course is a cross-cultural interaction between German and U.S. students conducted via Skype interviews. The third part of the course delves into comparative cross-cultural psychology in the realm of cognitive and social psychology. Students are introduced to rigorous methods and various topics within cross-cultural psychology. At the end of the seminar, students are to develop and present their own mini research proposal.

R Workshop

R is a free, crowdsourcing statistic program. It is a syntax based programming which gives it higher flexibility and finer grasps on the computations behind the statistics. The workshop will cover Introduction to R environment, Correlation and Regressions in R, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA, ANCOVA, MANOVA). The course should be an enabling gateway to explore more complicated statistics that R offers. As such, the course focuses primarily on basic information of how to use R.
