Gisela Anheier

The English Department mourns the untimely loss of our dear secretary, Gisela Anheier, who passed away in the early hours of January 8, 2020.

Gisela had been with us for 14 years. She acquired a proficient competence in English and the skills to find a way through the labyrinth of university bureaucracy. She efficiently managed the administration and communication within our department and beyond. Gisela helped organize courses, exams, exchange fairs, and conferences. She was not given to complaining, and she was never the problem, but always a part of the solution. She reminded us of anything we forgot – or would have liked to ignore. Whenever she could, she helped us out.

Gisela was active beyond the call of duty: even when on sick-leave, she worked from home or came in to sort things out simply because she loved her work. She was energetic and proactive, organizing Christmas dinners, hikes in the vicinity as well as trips to London and to Dublin.

Gisela was generous beyond belief: she did a lot for others but did not expect others to do a lot for her. She had enough self-esteem to be humble. That said, she had a mind of her own and did not take any nonsense. She had firm principles and a strict sense of justice, spiced with a good sense of humor. In a few words: Gisela was a great character in a small place.

Gisela put up a long and ardent fight against her illness. In the end, she succumbed to the long-term effects of her disease. May she rest in peace.

January 2020,                                The staff and the students of the English Department

P.S.: She might have said, ‘As long as you can do it, do it. And whenever you feel like complaining about something, think twice about what you can do to solve the problem.’
