Prof. Dr. Frank Hopfgartner

I am a Professor for Data Science und head of the Institute for Web Science & Technologies

My main research interest is in the intersection of intelligent information access and data analytics with an emphasis on the analysis and exploitation of personal data and user-generated content. I am interested in understanding and modelling how data-driven systems shape and influence people and society. In particular, I focus on interactive information retrieval and recommender systems. Often, I collaborate with partners from industry or other disciplines interested in developing personalisation services or in gaining new insights into their data or society.

I am an active member of the research community, e.g., as steering committee member of the ECIR and ACM SIGIR ICTIR conferences, general chair of ACM CIKM'23 and ACM CHIIR'24, or as co-organiser of evaluation campaigns at CLEF, NTCIR, and MediaEval. I am on the editorial board of the IP&M journal and was guest editor for various special issues of other journals.

I have completed my PhD in Computing Science at University of Glasgow under the supervision of Prof. Joemon M. Jose and Prof. Keith van Rijsbergen. After this, I have worked at research-led science & engineering centres in the US and Ireland, as well as at universities in Germany, China, and the UK.

My work is underpinned by data science, natural language processing, machine learning, human-computer interaction, and crowdsourcing techniques. I take pride in working with an interdisciplinary network of peers and in supervising the research efforts of PhD students and research associates.

Current Team

My team at the WeST Institute deals with all aspects of the acquisition, management, and analysis of data and information with the aim of extracting novel insights. For a more detailed overview of our research interests, I refer to the research topics page of the institute. Moreover, I am involved in the supervision of several PhD students at the Information School of University of Sheffield.
I take an active role in supervising the research efforts of my team, with the aim of enabling them to publish and present their work at leading academic conferences and journals.

Collaborations

Digital transformation with its focus on data-driven applications has a wide ranging and often disruptive impact on society. It contributes to the digital divide and impacts how we experience the world. Consequently, research in this field requires collaboration of experts of different disciplines.

Therefore, my research projects are often interdisciplinary in nature to address research questions from different angles. Amongst others, I have collaborated with professionals from the following sectors:

  • Healthcare (e.g., to predict adverse outcome of COVID-19 cases)
  • GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) (e.g., to process personal digital archives)
  • Information and Data Service Providers (e.g., to research personalised recommendation techniques)
  • Telecommunications (e.g., for predicting customer churn)
  • Arts and Humanities (e.g., to ease access to historic documents)

Funding

My research has been funded by a variety of sources such as the European Commission (European Science Foundation, Horizon 2020, FP7, Erasmus+), UK Research and Innovation (Research England, Arts and Humanities Research Council), BMWi, BMBF, Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, National Natural Science Foundation of China, and others. Moreover, I have conducted consultancy works for companies.

Previous Teams

Between 2018 and 2022, I have worked as Senior Lecturer in Data Science at the University of Sheffield, where I was the Head of the Information Retrieval Research Group. From 2015, I was working as Lecturer in Information Studies at University of Glasgow. Before that, I have worked at TU Berlin as Director of the Competence Centre Information Retrieval and Machine Learning. During and after my PhD studies, I was member of research groups in Computer Science departments in Glasgow, London, Dublin, and Berkeley.

Alumni

I have supervised several PhD students to completion. In Sheffield, I was nominated for a Vice-Chancellors Award for Learning and Teaching in recognition of my doctoral supervision. My alumni have studied research challenges in the fields of natural language processing, Web Science, social media analysis, human-computer interaction, and related topics. According to the database of the Math Geneology Project they are now direct academic descendants of Sir Isaac Newton, Galileo Galilei, and other renowned academics.

Moreover, I have managed several Postdocs and played host to international visiting academics.

As Senior Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy I have management and leadership experience in institutional promotion of excellence in teaching. I am committed to support students in developing graduate attributes that will help them to become experts in their fields.

Current teaching responsibilities

I am the coordinator of the Master in Web and Data Science course offered by the WeST Institute of Universität Koblenz.

At the Department of Computer Science, I offer lectures, exercises, seminars and practicals that are closely aligned with my research interests. For an overview of my current courses I refer to the course catalogue. Teaching material is shared via OpenOlat.

Moreover, I supervise theses of students of the Bachelor and Master programmes offered by the Department of Computer Science.

Previous and external appointments

Previously, I have taught at University of Sheffield, University of Glasgow, Technische Universität Berlin, and at Northeastern University. I have also given guest lectures at other universities and was involved in the organisation of summer and winter schools funded by the European Commission.

I am currently the external examiner of programmes of study offered by Aston University, University of Surrey, and University of Glasgow.

Most of my publications can be downloaded from open access repositories or can be accessed on the publishers' sites via their Digital Object Identifier.

The thesis offers students the opportunity to illustrate that they have learned how to employ the skills taught in their studies. For students of the Web and Data Science course, this means that they can independently work on a research question by analysing data or by designing, developing, and evaluating web and data-intensive systems. The topic of the thesis can be an important argument for a successful start of the career and should be chosen carefully. However, finding the right topic can be a challenge as it does not only require an understanding of both scope and scale of the project, but also a grasp of current research challenges and resources available. The following tips should make it easier for students of the Web and Data Science course to start looking for a topic.

Finding a topic and resources

Ideally, students identify a topic that interests both them and their supervisor. Before contacting me about thesis supervision, students should think about which question they want to work on. Do not just say I am interested in Topic X as I will ask for more concrete ideas. I might already have some topics in mind but welcome other topics that closely align with my research interests. A good approach to finding a thesis topic is to first find available resources and then think about what can be done with them. Fortunately, there are plenty of good resources on the web that could be used to cover typical Web and Data Science thesis topics. Promising datasets can be found, for example, on the following portals:

There are also a few academic evaluation campaigns that release data sets and/or tools that might be suitable for thesis projects. Interesting campaigns are organised as part of the following conferences:

We also have some resources available at the WeST Institute.

Finally, below links might also be useful:

External supervision

In previous years, I have also supervised theses in collaboration with industry partners (e.g., BMW, Virgin Media, local SME's) or volunteer groups. Industry-led thesis projects have the potentials to provide benefits for all parties involved. While you are able to work on real-world research challenges, companies can benefit from fresh ideas from highly motivated students. Please note that for such collaborations to succeed, all parties involved must agree beforehand that academic quality of the thesis has to be the top priority.

Previous theses

Below list contains a small selection of the 100+ theses that I have supervised in the past.

  • A Study of the Customer Churn of Virgin Media Business using CNNs
  • Improving Digital Health Coaching: A Hidden Markov Model Analysis of Adhering-Related User Behaviour Based on Log Data
  • The Effect of Gamification on User Engagement of Mobile Applications in China
