Design of the study
This experimental study involves a group of primary school teachers (N=18) who receive training on the use of multilingualism in German classes, as well as a control group (N=16) that does not receive any training and conducts classes as usual.
As well as recording attitudes to multilingualism, the experiences and motivation of all teachers are assessed. The metalinguistic awareness of primary school children (N=509) is evaluated using the M-SPRA assessment tool (Wildemann et al., 2016); their cognitive and German-language abilities are assessed as control variables using the CFT 20-R and Tulpenbeet instruments, respectively. This way, potential relations between the teacher training, German lessons and student performance may be analyzed.
There are three data measurement times:
1st data assessment (Pre-test): Primary school teachers: demographical data, attitudes toward multilingualism, experiences with multilingualism, motivation to teach Primary school children: demographical data, general cognitive ability, German language abilities, motivation |
2nd data assessment (Post-test): Primary school teachers: attitudes toward multilingualism, experiences with multilingualism, motivation to teach Primary school children: metalinguistic awareness, motivation |
3rd data assessment (Follow-up): Primary school teachers: attitudes toward multilingualism, experiences with multilingualism, motivation to teach Primary school children: metalinguistic awareness, motivation |
