Doctoral Researcher in Digital Behavioral Research

GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences in Cologne, Department Computational Social Science is looking for a
Doctoral Researcher in Digital Behavioral Research (working time 75%, limited to 4 years)
The interdisciplinary department Computational Social Science is dedicated to the study of socio-political phenomena and digital society. For this purpose, we are using novel approaches to data collection (e.g., web scraping, web tracking, smartphone apps) and different types of methods for analysis (e.g., machine learning, network analysis, text and data mining).   
Tasks
  • Exploring the requirements for and usage practices of Data Science methods in the social sciences, for example through surveys, expert interviews, network analysis or text analysis of publication corpora
  • Collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data
  • Quality assurance and documentation of digital behavioral data (e.g., social media, web tracking data)
  • Opportunity to write a dissertation using the digital behavioral data collected at GESIS
Profile
  • Masters degree in sociology, political science, communication science, psychology, survey methodology, statistics or a related discipline
  • Knowledge of quantitative data analysis (ideally in R)
  • Very good English skills (spoken and written), knowledge of German is a plus
  • Experiences in the follow areas are a plus: open science, conceptualization and implementation of own data collections, application of data science or text analysis methods
