DSC measures heat flow in a sample (usually a polymer) in comparison to a reference sample. It is possible to identify glass transition behaviour or melting points. These thermal events are characteristic for every material (polymer) and give information about the rigidity of the matrix.

For soil samples a non-reversing step transition behaviour was found. The higher the step transition temperature T*, the more rigid is the molecule network in the soil organic matter (SOM). It is generally accepted that these rigid zones in SOM are responsible for non-linear sorption and hysteresis, so that DSC investigations give indirectly information about soil sorption behaviour.
