Running projects:

Degue fever is a mosquito-borne infection and major health concern in various regions worldwide. Deterministic and also stochastic models have been proposed to describe the spread of Dengue. Mathematical tools from optimal control can help to simulate, predict and improve the effectiveness of campaigns against the disease. The projects aims to combine the expertise of the German and the Portuguese partners to be able to answer optimization questions for complex models reflecting the infection dynamics of Dengue.
Muscles plays prominente role in human motion. The aim of this project is to develop, analyze and apply mathematical models for human muscles.
The project BBE's Groups - Business, Engineering and Education Study Groups - is a series of three week-long study groups with industry. The study group workshops are devoted to consideration and solving of several specific problems posed by industrial companies
We envisage to build a European digital environment and web-portal for applied and industrial mathematics. More immediate goal is to share information and experience, describe examples of web based courses in applied mathematics and technologies for web publication of interactive documents.
The ratio of pupils and potential students to mathematics is decisively shaped in the school. However, the world of mathematics in schools is so different from that of higher education institutions that special education is needed between pupils, teachers, students and teachers at the university. For this reason we would like to continue the two independent projects, the taster courses "Math for all" and the holiday courses "Fit for studying with modeling" in 2014 as well.
The ECMI educational committee has taken virtual education and web-supported solutions as one of its target areas to complement the other strategic areas like ECMI curriculum development, modeling weeks, mobility of students & staff etc.

Finished projects:

Several results in the literature have shown that multi-objective combinatorial optimization (MOCO) problems are hard to be solved from a computational complexity point of view, which impairs the application of these concepts in real-life problems. However, recent results in the literature show that there exist several particular cases of these problems that can be solved in polynomial amount of time. Therefore, the identification of tractable particular cases of multi-objective combinatorial optimization problems is of interest both from a practical and theoretical point of view. The main research goals of this project are to characterize and recognize polynomial solvability of MOCO problems and to derive general methodologies to design efficient polynomial time algorithms for tractable cases.
The main goal of the standardized competence-oriented matriculation examination is to secure basic mathematical skills in Austria's AHS. The catalog of basic competences developed in this context is the starting point and point of reference for sustainable education and a modern, performance-enhancing performance assessment in mathematics.
The project deals with decoding algorithms and code analysis methods for turbo-like codes (including standard turbo codes and 3D turbo codes), which are based on mathematical optimization methods, which mainly come from linear and network optimization.
Veranstaltungen wie "Public Viewing", Stadtfeste oder Konzerte sind regelmäßiger Bestandteil des urbanen Lebens. Für die notwendigen Sicherheitskonzepte zur Verhinderung von Unglücken fehlen Veranstaltern und Sicherheitskräften jedoch bisher wissenschaftlich fundierte und praxisgerechte Planungshilfen.
The project is concerned with the development of decoding algorithms based on mathematical optimization, but at the same time minimizing the hardware complexity (energy consumption, chip area, parallelizability, ...) with regard to possible hardware implementation.
Mathematical modeling still has little room in the classroom, although it is firmly anchored as a process-related competence in educational standards. Usually such activities are carried out exclusively within the framework of project days. In order to advance or investigate the integration of modeling tasks as a possibility of scientific work for learners in interdisciplinary regular lessons, the topic of alternative energies serves as a basis and motivation for the sustainability research of different forms of energy.
Despite high safety standards in chemical plants, accidents that result in harmful substances can not be ruled out. In such a case, coordinated action must be taken quickly to ensure employee safety.
The project HeMaS (constructively dealing with heterogeneity in mathematics lessons of sec. 1) aims to provide 30 schools in Rhineland-Palatinate with an intensive support in dealing with the increased heterogeneity in mathematics education
