Research profile of the department




Scientific and mathematical research leads from fundamentals through models and experiments or simulations to an understanding of processes and systems with the aim of application and especially optimization. Here, natural sciences and mathematics are to a certain extent complementary and stimulate each other. Experimental results from scientific research result in model ideas that can be substantiated and validated by model-based simulations. Simulations close gaps where experiments are impossible or difficult and give rise to the design of future experiments. FB3, as a mathematical and natural science department with a structure that at first glance appears to be quite heterogeneous, looks at a broad spectrum of processes and systems: from biodiversity research to water science projects to technical ceramics and medical issues.


Faculty 3 consists of the Institute for Integrated Natural Sciences with the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geography and Physics, the Mathematical Institute and the Institute for Sports Science with currently 17 professorial working groups and four vacancies whose reassignment has been applied for. In 2013, FB3 presented a development concept under the thematic umbrella of "Materials & Environment" with the three pillars "Material properties and functional surfaces", "Modeling and simulation" and "Biodiversity and ecosystems". Building on this, the research activities were continuously developed. The research group "Microplastics in Inland Waters", in which groups from FB3 and the Federal Institute for Hydrology (BfG) have been working together since 2017, represents a step towards focusing research in FB3 and is also part of the application as part of the Rhineland-Palatinate research initiative "Indirect Effects of anthropogenic stressors in ecosystems ”. Biodiversity research projects are also being carried out in close cooperation with the Bettenfeld biological-ecological station and the “Rwanda Center and Office for Africa Cooperation”. Furthermore, FB3, together with the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences, is the sponsor of the research college "Institute of Advanced Ceramic Material Properties Studies". We cooperate with FB4, the Koblenz University and regional clinics under the umbrella of the MTI. The competence center for subject didactics in the natural sciences / mathematics will bridge the gap in MINT teacher training.


The majority of the working groups in FB3 deal with research projects that are within the framework of the model concept of the preamble. The examined models come from all subjects represented at FB3. The spectrum here is broad and ranges from the description and further development of mathematical models, of model organisms or ecosystems, to analytical methods for characterizing model systems, to the properties of catalysts, ceramic materials, polymeric materials and active surfaces. Ultimately, however, what most of these systems and processes have in common is that their structures and properties can be explained and optimized using computer-based simulations and / or experimental investigations. All the systems and processes described can also be assigned to the thematic areas of biodiversity, anthropogenic stressors & the environment, ceramic materials and surfaces, biomechanics as well as mathematical analysis and further development of MSO algorithms and methods, which in turn correspond to the orientation of the specialist courses offered by FB3.


Research priorities




This profile area is excellently networked regionally and nationwide, as shown by the master's course “Ceramic Science and Engineering” run jointly with the Koblenz University and the state's research college “Institute of Advanced Ceramic Material Properties Studies”. A large number of partnerships in industry and with international universities also demonstrate the supra-regional claim of this area.


The future profile area "Water" with corresponding programs in research and teaching strengthens the cooperation with the regionally extremely important strategic partners BfG and University of Koblenz. The close proximity to the BfG and the location of Koblenz at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers give the topic of "water" the potential to create a profile for a University of Koblenz. However, the topic is not only relevant regionally, but also globally in its various forms and offers a variety of interdisciplinary research approaches (e.g. in the area of ​​Big Data with FB4). Under this roof, activities of the department in the area of ​​"Indirect Effects of Anthropogenic Stressors in Ecosystems" (biodiversity research in standing and flowing waters as well as in moors, as well as the necessary experimental and mathematical characterization methods) with competencies of the University of Koblenz (e.g. in the field of hydraulic engineering) subsume.




The methods profile area comprises the further development of mathematical modeling, numerical simulation and optimization methods, and experimental analysis methods. This profile area is complementary to the two above-mentioned profile areas and interacts with them: New questions require new methods, further developed methods make it possible to open up new fields of application.
