Note: The module is delivered in eight weekly sessions comprising a mix of lecture/seminar and group discussion activities. The sessions are double lectures (08:30-11:45).  

Course Information

The module provides an introduction to research philosophy, research methods and research design. The aims of the module are twofold:

  1. To provide an in-depth examination of the key themes and debates in Science and Technology Studies (STS). At the end of the module, students should have a good understanding of the basic epistemological controversies in social research and interpretations of what constitutes scientific knowledge.
  2. To provide an introduction to Research Design. At the end of the module, students should be able to present a well-constructed research design that shows how their research aims and objectives are achieved through the selection of appropriate research methodologies and methods.

Content of the course

  • Science and Technology studies – epistemologies and research traditions
  • Post-positivist vs. Interpretive research approaches
  • Qualitative vs. quantitative approaches
  • Research design – approaches and frameworks for understanding
  • Identifying and expressing aims, objectives and research questions
  • The role of theory
  • Undertaking a review of the extant literature and an overview of scholarly communication
  • Effective research information management
  • Research quality and research ethics

Mode of delivery: The class comprises a mixture of lectures, presentations and smaller discussion group sessions in which students are required to relate research theory to their proposed research design.

Course entry requirements

This is a Master course. The lecture and seminar course must be taken together in the same semester to complete the course module (6ECTS).

Note: If you are still finishing your Bachelor thesis you may not enroll in this course.
Note: To participate in this course in Summer Semester 2018 you must:
  1. Register in KLIPS before the first session
  2. Attend the first lecture session (27.11.2018)
  3. Create an account for UniConnect.

Note: Despite extended enrolment-phases in KLIPS, only registrations before the first session are valid. Students trying to register after the first session, or in a later enrolment-phase, cannot participate.

If you do not meet these requirements you will not be able to take the course in SS2018.

Credit points

Module (Lecture + Seminar) (4 SWS): 6 Credit Points

Students must complete both assessment items to pass the module. Each item will be graded out of 50 and the total /100 will determine the final module grade.

Note: All documents (slides, script, literature) will be in English.

Assessment Information

Lecture: Individual report on research design, including literature analysis and research motivation. Date: TBC

Seminar: Group presentation and report on a given research method. Date: TBC
