Maria A. Wimmer chairs the research group eGovernment at the Institute for Information Systems Research. She studied Computer Science at the  Johannes Kepler University of Linz, Austria. After her graduation, she had a two years research stay in Italy (research focus: holistic analysis and design of safety-critical systems in the area of train traffic control). Thereafter, she returned to the University of Linz, Institute for Informatics in Business and Administration and she turned her research focus on  e-government and e-democracy.  In 2000, she finished her doctoral thesis. In 2003, Maria A. Wimmer became Associate Professor (Habilitation) in Applied Computer Science and managed a number of research projects of the Institute in the area of e-government.

From 2004 till 2005, she worked in the ICT operative unit of the Federall Chancellery in Austria (Vienna). Her thematic areas were interoperability, digital signatures of administrations, education concept for e-government for public servants, etc.

Since November 2005, Maria A. Wimmer is Professor for eGovernment and chair of the research group eGovernment at the Institute for Information Systems (IS) research at University of Koblenz-Landau, Germany.

Her main research and teaching foci are e-government and e-democracy / e-participation, systems analysis, systems design in terms of modelling and managing information and interoperation, processes and knowledge in a comprehensive way based on a holistic perspective.

With her research group, she is involved in the following EC-(co-)funded research and implementation projects in e-government and e-participation:

Maria Wimmer's teaching offers span across lectures on systems analyis, modelling of business-oriented information systems, public panagement and e-government, including e-democracy, open government etc.. Besides the lectures, she offers seminars and practical studies and exercises for bachelor and master students. She supervises bachelor-, master- and diploma theses. And she supervises the doctoral theses of her staff and a few external doctoral students.

Maria A. Wimmer has been and is still involved in a number of jury and  evaluation panels for national and international competitions and prizes on e-government .

The chair of e-government research group e-government is member of the following domain-specific communities:

  • IFIP (Chair of WG 8.5)
  • GI (member of board of working goup e-government and spokesperson for the technical committee legal informatics and e-government)
  • OCG (vice chair of the Forum e|Government and member of the board)
  • egov-network of the IWVI
  • Scientific association of digital government

Maria A. Wimmer co-organises a series of international conferences on eGovernment and she is in several program committees (see Conferences). She has published more than 150 papers on eGovernment and eParticipation (see Publications) and wrote the contribution eGovernment (Verwaltungsinformatik) in the German Online Encyclopedia of Information Systems (in German).
