Q: I do not speak any German. Will that be a problem while attending the Summer Academy?

A: Basically, no. The courses are held in English and many people on campus and outside of campus can speak English.

Q: I would like to travel around on the weekends. Can I check out of my room from Friday to Sunday evening?

A: It depends on the type of room you booked. With enough previous notice, the owners/managers of the hotels are willing to have you stay on weekdays only. Usually, they can also provide you with a safe place to store your luggage, so that you can travel light. Please tell us as soon as possible if you wish to make use of this option.

Q: I have never been to Europe before. What sort of transportation is best?

A: As opposed to many large countries like the USA and Australia, it is common within Europe to use public transportation (e.g. buses, trains, subways, commuter trains) for travelling instead of renting a car. Under Arrival you can get information about how to get to Koblenz.

Q: How much time do I need to consider for the application of my visa?

A: According to the experience of former participants, the whole process may take up to two months (from asking for an appointment till you get your visa).

If you schedule your first appointment at the embassy before you have received your official invitation letter from us, please be aware that it may take up to 10 days, depending on where you are living, until the letter reaches you via regular mail. We can send you a scanned copy in advance.

Q: What is the easiest and cheapest way to communicate with organisers and other participants of the Summer Academy during our four weeks stay?

A: You have guaranteed internet access on campus and in some of the accommodations, thus you can always reach people via eMail. Additionally, we would recommend you to buy a German SIM card for your mobile phone upon arrival in Germany. They usually cost around 10 € and we will înform you about the provider with the lowest tariffs closer at the time.

If you are interested in communicating with past participants or members of the organisation body of the Summer Academy on facebook, feel free to join the Summer Academy Koblenz group!

Q: What will the weather be like during the Summer Academy?

A: Koblenz is in a moderate climate zone, which means it never gets very hot or extremely cold. However, in June and July temperatures can vary from ~10°C on colder nights to ~32°C on hot days and it also rains from time to time. So we suggest to bringing summer clothes as well as wind- and waterproof jacket.
