Survey and documentation of the genetic variability of wild populations of brown trout (Salmo trutta), burbot (Lota lota) and noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) from different river basin districts in Germany

Biodiversity is an important, internationally recognized legally protected good. The sustainable use of its components (i.e. genetic resources) was formulated as an objective e.g. 1993 in the Convention on Biological Diversity, which was also ratified by Germany. The principle of 'protection through use' is implemented also in the national technical program 'Aquatic Genetic Resources' of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection. This principle requires to adequately take into account evolutionary distinct populations within a species. The main objective of this project is the identification and assessment of appropriate units ['Evolutionary Significant Units "(ESUs)] for practical measures of stock management of brown trout, burbot and nobel cryfish with respect to fisheries management as well as to conservation in Germany.
