1. Topic

Student Labs as Teaching-Learning Labs – Inquiry-based Learning in Interdisciplinary Contexts

2. Research Group Members

3. Need for research, objective target and contribution to the research profile

Student laboratories provide an excellent basis for studying pedagogical practices of all types. Research into the effect, expectations and experience of using student laboratories is quite heterogeneous, and thus offers an open research field.
The existing student laboratories in Faculty 7 (Mathematics-Lab „Math is More“, Mathematical Environment Lab, Natural Sciences Lab and Mobile Lab) are ideal for cooperative research efforts. The objective for planned projects is to apply research focused on understanding the learning process in interdisciplinary contexts to optimize how students work and think in academic settings. Research questions include identifying cognitive processes, the use of representational and digital media, working independently and in group settings. These projects should contribute to the University’s profile in terms of innovative teaching and cooperative research projects.
The content of the research projects are included in the “Education and Environment” focus, under which research is planned to study how to sustainably engage students on education and environment themes. The increased use by students of social media technologies cannot be ignored, and in fact can be used to motivate student engagement in the natural and mathematical sciences.

4. Structure, work planning and cooperation planning

The following research projects will be pursued under the theme “Inquiry-based Learning in Interdisciplinary Contexts”:
  • ProLab – Protocols in Laboratories
  • Networking of representational and computer-based media to deal with heterogeneity
  • Networking between in-class and out-of-class learning - Empirical studies of the effect of learning laboratories on the development of teaching in the school
  • Teaching concepts and related learning / competence developments in the area of professional science (emphasis on "Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)")
  • Optimization of learning processes on the perception of environmental risks
  • Categorized video material plus additional materials (CV+)
    • Development of categorized video material plus additional materials (CV+) from student laboratories for courses in teacher education programs mathematics and chemistry as well as the natural sciences
    • Development of CV+ items measuring diagnostic and critical thinking of student teachers
    • Empirical study of the effect of CV+ tasks on the diagnosis and reflection competencies of student teachers
The members of this project have already developed a network of curricular and extracurricular learning research. This project synergizes with these existing cooperative projects and offers new avenues for knowledge transfer. Long-term data are necessary to test hypotheses associated with sustainability of learning processes and the effects of extracurricular learning, which are crucial to attaining DFG projects in the future. Recent obtained external funding (Deutsche Telekom Stiftung) demonstrate the success of this interdisciplinary and collaborative research approach.
