Competence Centers

Through the establishment of competence centers, ZIFET of the University of Koblenz - Landau enables third parties to engage in certain research topics, while financially supporting them and enhancing their visibility. In general, the competence centers are established to address application-oriented, basic research and are funded through donations from third parties. The average time frame of the competence centers is usually a minimum of two years. In essence, the funds will be used in order to finance researchers for the time frame required in their assigned tasks within the respective competence centers. In regards to content, we aspire to achieve various studies and sets of instruments that can be published in ZIFET's own series of working reports or journal articles. Bachelor and Master theses, project and research internships, as well as dissertations, will be supervised by the relevant competence center. Finally, ZIFET supports cooperative ventures from the respective competence centers.

At the interface between the organization (in a wider sense) of railway companies, such as Deutsche Bahn (DB AG) or the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Française (SNCF), and the use of new information and communication technologies, particularly diagnostic and monitoring systems, there is a potential for improvement, which has not been sufficiently researched until now. Through the strategic partnership between ZIFET and the voestalpine SIGNALING Siershahn GmbH in Siershahn, Germany, a unique opportunity has been created to conduct fundamental research at this interface and to position the scientific research strategically and practically.

The scientific discussion regarding knowledge and technology transfer, otherwise known as “Transfer Science”, is still in its initial stages. However, it is particularly important in today’s world as knowledge and technology transfer presents an increasingly complex and dynamic phenomenon. At this point, a transdisciplinary approach is needed, which - now again multidisciplinary - deals substantially with the concept of knowledge and transfer, taking into consideration the social integration of knowledge and transfer, as well as investigating the interaction process that takes place between provider and recipient in terms of knowledge and transfer. ZIFET’s main task is to investigate and pursue those tasks mentioned, in this competence center for knowledge transfer.

COMPETENCE CENTER "Foundation Life Track" (CC SL)

The structure of the Competence Center "Foundation Life Track" is directly connected to the objectives of the foundation “Lebensspur e.V." ( ): "With a view to develop potential, encourage funding, and a vision of acceptance for people with disabilities, the ‘Foundation Life Track’ initiates steps of actions and / or independently leads them through various life phases and life sectors, spanning motivation and integration of education, work, leisure, and health in their respective social and personal environment." ZIFET supports "Lebensspur" through its own social commitment. The formation and the structure of the competence center serves the goals of approaching and supporting the creativity- and innovation-driven needs of people with disabilities, with high entrepreneurial and innovation potential in experimental environments. In particular, virtual and real innovation laboratories should be jointly developed and prototypically implemented by and for people with disabilities.
