Health Care
The health care system in Germany is complex, but offers comprehensive medical advice, information and treatment to people living in Germany.
In general, it is mandatory to have a health insurance in Germany. Most of the people have a public health insurance. But, it is also possible to opt for a private health insurance. Please check the following website "Health Insurance".
The first point of contact for medical problems is the family doctor (“Hausarzt”). The family doctor treats common diseases and refers you to a specialist or to a hospital. In general, doctors are available during the day on weekdays. At night, during weekends and on public holidays doctors surgeries are usually closed, but emergency services are available. 
In general, it is better to make an appointment in advance. Don't forget to bring your health insurance card to the appointment with the familiy doctor!

Studying can be very demanding. Especially international students are facing a lot of challenges. To be separated from the family, to have high expectations towards the studies and to cope with the new and different culture can be overloading. Not every student can cope with this. Don’t hesitate to ask for help and assistance!

Everybody in Germany having a health insurance can consult a psychologist. On the following website you can find psychotherapist in your region in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is possible to select the language in the menu. Please indicate the correct health insurance (private or public) as not every psychotherapist is allowed to accept patients with a public health insurance. If you have an urgent medical problem at night, during weekends or on public holidays and need to see a doctor, you will have to consult the medical emergency service (“Ärztlicher Notdienst” or “Ärztlicher Bereitschaftsdienst”).

It is not possible to make appointments in the medical emergency service. You will have to go there directly and wait patiently for your turn.
In a life-threatening emergency, if someone is seriously ill or injured and the life is at risk, call 112.
Except from some private clinics, all hospitals are available for sick people in Germany. In general, you need a referral from a doctor, only in emergency cases you will get a treatment in a hospital.
