General information about Botswana

The Republic of Botswana covers an area of 582,000 km² and has 2.26 million inhabitants. The capital Gaborone has about 230,000 inhabitants.

The desert climate is predominantly hot and dry. Winters, however, are cool with occasional night frosts.

The official languages are Setswana and English. About 70% of the population are Christians of various churches, the rest are mainly attributed to the animists; Baha'i and Muslims (about 5,000 mostly of South Asian origin).

In 2016, the gross domestic product per inhabitant was US$ 7,227 (by comparison: Germany US$ 42,177) (destatis.de).
