Child benefit

Who is entitled to child benefit and how much is it?

An entitlement to child benefit arises when a child is born. It is paid regardless of the amount of income earned by the parents. The rates from 1 January 2009 are €164 per month for the first and second child, €170 per month for the third child and €195 per month for the fourth and every subsequent child.

Child benefit is treated as the income of the children and is offset against other benefits (unemployment benefit). It is not taken into consideration when calculating financial student support and parental benefits.

How do I apply for child benefit?

Applications must be submitted in writing. Benefits are paid out by the unemployment agency’s cash desk or, if the parents are civil servants, by the employer.

Further information is available on the website of the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit).
