Maternity benefit

Maternity benefit is paid in lieu of a wage or salary. Female students are entitled to maternity benefit if they are in an employment relationship that already existed when they became pregnant or that is terminated by the employer during the pregnancy.

If you are insured through a statutory health insurance company, please apply for maternity benefit directly through your health insurer. You will also need to submit a certificate from your doctor stating the anticipated date of birth. In most cases you will find an application form on your health insurer’s website.

Female students insured through their family or a private health insurance company must submit the application form and doctor’s certificate stating the anticipated date of birth to the maternity protection department at the German Federal (Social) Insurance Office (Mutterschutzstelle des Bundesversicherungsamtes).
